Margaret Jane Bone Canon (1819-1857), the daughter of Joseph Canon and Polly S. Canon, went by the name Jane. The family name was also spelled Cannon. Her father was a farmer in the Burnett area near Smyrna, Rutherford County. At the age of 33, Jane became the second wife of Thomas Montgomery Coldwell. The couple had one child, Margaret Coldwell, who was born about 1859.
Jane’s simple marking sampler contains four alphabets, the numbers 1-9, two aphorisms, a verse written by Hannah More (1745 1833), and her birth date. Jane’s brother, Alanson B. Canon, married Elizabeth C. Sharp (TSS 064).
