Description:
Elizabeth's text reads:
Remember thy Creator in the days of thy/youth
Religion should our thoughts engage
Amidst our youthful bloom
Twill fit us for declining age
And for the awful tomb
Elizabeth Overton Rowe.s Sampler.
May 22d 1839
The first line is from Ecclesiastes 12:1. The quatrain is from John Fawcett's (1740–1817) poem “Religion is the Chief Concern,” Verse 3, published in 1782. The same text, in the same order, appears on the c. 1844 Frances (Fannie) Ann Collins sampler (TSS 218).
