Sarah (Sallie) Jane Cotton (1853—1916), who went by the name of Sallie, was the eldest child of William Henry Cotton and Martha Jane Ballard. Her father was a farmer near Leipers Fork, Williamson County. Sallie stitched her marking sampler in 1861 when the Civil War started. In 1877 Sallie married a farmer named George Bartlett Tucker. The couple lived in Dist. 6, just a few miles from the Cotton farm. The Tuckers had five children. Sallie is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Franklin, Williamson County.
Sallie’s sampler survives in its original frame. She worked the entire bottom half of her sampler in cross stitch over one thread.
