Mary King Sowell (1851—52) was the daughter of Henry Claywell Sowell and Jane Cleopatra King. Mary died at the age of 9 months, 19 days. She is buried in the Charles Sowell Cemetery, Williamsport, Maury Co., near her mother and father. Jane went on to have more children before her husband died in 1860, leaving her with three children under the age of seven.
This sampler was probably stitched by Jane Cleopatra King Sowell (1828—1919), mother of Mary King Sowell, or by another close female relative of the little girl. The maker attached four blonde curls to a black ribbon and stitched the ribbon to the bottom of the sampler. The original frame, constructed of remnants of veneer, is attributed to a family member who was a furniture maker.
