Annis Franklin Kyle’s (1853-1918) parents were Absalom Kyle and Mary Ann Graham Morison. Her father was a prosperous lawyer in Rogersville. Annis married lawyer Henry Solon Kane Morison and had six children. They moved to the Morison home in Estillville, Scott Co, VA.
In 1867 the Kyles sent Annis to school at the Salem Female Academy in Salem, NC. She attended from August 8, 1867 until May 1869, taking ornamental needlework in addition to the regular curriculum. Her large and colorful exotic bird and flowers are worked completely in cross stitch on a linen canvas. She used skill threads against wool to create highlights. The embroidery survives in its original frame.
