Biography:
Jane Littleton (1835-1887) was the child of John Arnold Littleton and Mary Scott. She never married and lived all her life on the Littleton farm in the Castalian Springs area of Sumner Co. near the Trousdale Co. line.
Description:
Jane’s sampler features turkey work, an uncommon technique in Tennessee sampler. Turkey work is a knotted stitch in which the loops are cut to give a plush effect. An outline drawn in pencil can be seen in the border where the wool fibers have disintegrated.
