Sarah Elizabeth Jones (c.1836-?) was born in VA, the third child of Absalom and Sarah Jones. The family came to TN in the 1830s settling first in Benton Co. and later in Henry County. After the Civil War, Sarah married Elijah F. McLaughlin, a widower with four children with whom she had two children of her own.
Sarah's long and narrow sampler is from West TN, one of the few that can be located in that portion of the state. Two-thirds of West TN samplers are worked with wool fibers on large count ground fabric. Sarah's red and green palette is also found in Middle TN, where the Jones family had relatives.
