Isabel Stewart (1834-1914) was the second child of John Stewart and his first wife, who died giving birth to Isabel. John Stewart was a farmer and laborer in Davidson County near Nashville. Isabel became the second wife of Hartwell Perry Reavis. She gave birth to nine children, six of whom grew to adulthood. Hartwell died in 1902 and Isabel in 1914. Both are buried in the Crystal Plains Cemetery, Smith Center, Smith Co., KS.
The Stewart family lived near Minerva College, a female seminary, where Isabel most likely made her sampler at the age of 14. Her teacher would have been Catharine Stewart Jones, wife of Rev. Sandy Elrod Jones, president and founder of the school. Fancy work of every description cost an additional $10.00 a term.
