Rebecca Jane Russell (1825-?) was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Russell of Rogersville. She was nine years old when she made this sampler at the Powell School under the tutelage of Rachel Clifton.
For a nine year old girl, Rebecca showed impressive mastery of her needle. All of the flowers in her border, the pink interior border, the pink and yellow dividing bands, the basket, and the flowers in the basket are worked in queen stitch, a favorite of Tennessee sampler makers.
