Richard Artemus Stegall (1847-1919), who was known by his middle name, learned how to stitch at his mother’s sick bed. His mother recovered from her illness and Artemus managed the family farm for her. He married, fathered a child, and became the first florist in Roane Co.
Artemus' sampler is the only one worked by a boy documented by the Tennessee Sampler Survey.
