The stitcher only included her last name, Polk, a very common name in Middle and West Tennessee. In the 1850 Census, 13 girls with the last name of Polk were the right age to have made this sampler.
We have assigned this sampler a Middle Tennessee origin, based on the color palette (red, orange, and green) and the motifs (floral sprigs, wreath, and butterfly).
