Biography:
Caroline Walton Allen (1810-1828) was one of nine children born to Robert Allen and his first wife Rebecca Greer. Robert Allen, who had been an officer in the War of 1812, became a lawyer and a Tennessee Representative to the US Congress. Both Caroline and her younger sister Rebecca attended the Nashville Female Academy in 1823-24. Caroline never married; she died at the age of 17 in 1828.

Caroline W. Allen’s watercolor was carefully preserved by her family. Her brother Joseph W. Allen wrote in a note on the back.

Female Academy. given to me by my
sister Mrs Rebecca G . Allison in 1847.
I have preserved it fifty years, and now
give it to my son Benjn B. Allen
to take care of, and see that is des=
=cends to some members of my mothers
descendants.
It was painted in the year Eighteen
hundred and twenty four. (1824).

Mr. Allen also includes a clipping “Old Academy Girls” from the Nashville Daily American of Mon., Oct. 17, 1899. He writes, “Two Sisters and one Sister-in-law in this list/ JWA.” The family members circled are: Louisa A. Gibbs, Caroline W. Allen, and Rebecca G. Allen.
