Biography:
Lucy Batte McGowan (1818-1866) was the tenth of thirteen children born to Rev. Ebenezer McGowan (MacGowan) and his second wife Frances Baugh. Her father was a successful planter, a Methodist minister, and founder of the Bethel Methodist Church on Sulphur Springs Road, near their home.
Description:
Lucy may have attended the Female Academy in Murfreesboro which was founded in 1825. The school, affiliated with the Methodist Church, was run by Mary Banks and Nancy Banks and was known to have taught needlework.
