Biography:
Known as the Belle of Stoney Point (her family home), Elizabeth Jane Bushong (1838-1929), the only child of Phillip Bushong and Mary E. Dryden, was quite a beauty. The family lived in Paperville near Bristol, Sullivan County. Jane, as she preferred to be called, may have learned how to stitch a marking sampler from her mother, who was known to be an excellent needleworker. After the Civil War Jane married neighbor Jacob Susong Carmack. The couple had three children, one of whom died at birth.
Description:
Jane’s simple and unfinished marking sampler uses only cross stitch.
