Biography:
Mary Ann Pass (1847-1933) was one of five children born to Nathaniel Green Pass and Sarah Nancy Morgan. Her father was a farmer and a laborer in Blount County. Her mother died when Mary Ann was nine years old. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 the family moved to Roane County. Mary Ann wed Elbert Huffman, a farmer, in 1873. In 1880 they were living in Lenoir City, Loudon County. The couple never had any children.
Description:
Mary Ann made her sampler as a gift for Betty Smith, who was likely a younger cousin. Presentation samplers were often made by scholarship students for their sponsors or, as in this case, as gifts to close family or friends.
