Biography:
Frances Matilda Batey (1842-1926) was called Fanny. The daughter of George Roland Batey II and Frances Burchett Taylor, she attended Franklin College in Nashville run by Mr.and Mrs. Tolbert Fanning. She married Columbus Layfayette Brittain.
Description:
The ground fabric used for this sampler is an unusual color and has not been documented on any other Tennessee sampler. Fanny had just turned 20 years old when she finished her sampler, making her much older than the average Tennessee stitcher.
