Description:
Elmina's sampler is known to us only from a black and white photograph in the archives at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art, Winston-Salem, NC. Her square sampler is bordered in a running dog pattern. A manuscript alphabet, followed by the numbers 1-10, and an italic alphabet surmount the popular verse celebrating samplers. A basket of flowers rests at the bottom with two additional texts to either side. The signature reads: "Elmina M. Graham June the 1 1824 EMG." Cross, eyelet, and four-sided stitches are evident in the photo.
